Rescuers on the East Coast of the United States are working hard to save stray and abandoned dogs at risk of succumbing to the harsh winter cold that has hit the region with full force.

Among them is Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue. Within just the past week they’ve taken in a handful of stray dogs while out checking neighborhoods for cold strays and ensuring that locals are not leaving their dogs outside.

One dog rescued was a German Shepherd running around a park. The Detroit Pit Crew arrived with a cage and was able to catch her without too much fuss.

“Today was her lucky day! She is now safe and sound and on board with Detroit Pit Crew,” the rescuers shared.

Another was a poor dog left at a gas station. Detroit Pit Crew was contacted by the gas station employee and a Good Samaritan, Cheryl Lynn who explained that the dog was hanging around the gas station for a couple of days.

“Today he was desperate to get inside & customers can be mean so the cashier secured him & gave him the box & blanket until I could get someone out there.”

She added, “The gas station attendant was stuck. He couldn’t do much to help. I asked him to take him out a box (all stations have THAT at least) so he wasn’t sitting in the snow! So glad that gas station employee reached out for help for this boy and thank you all for jumping to the rescue!”

“Thankfully he survived the cold and we will make sure that he gets the heartworm treatment he needs to go on to live a happy, healthy life,” The Detroit Pit Crew wrote.

Yet another dog was found alone in a derelict home. Even with a roof over her head, she too could have died from starvation and the cold.

“We received a call from a kindhearted Detroit Police Officer who reported to us that this poor dog had been left behind by some squatters,” The Detroit Pit Crew wrote on Facebook. “It is unclear about how long she was left in this cold abandoned house by herself. Thankfully she is now safe and sound and on board with Detroit Pit Crew.”

In Detroit, as in other cities and states, anti-tethering laws prohibit dogs from being left outside in the cold for more than a few hours at a time. If they are left outside without adequate shelter and protection, the dog owners can be prosecuted for animal cruelty.

With all these rescues, the dogs were saved because people took the time and effort to contact the animal rescue. If you see a dog left outside in the cold, please be sure to reach out for help.
