1967 Plymouth Hurst Barracuda Stops by Leno’s Garage

The Plymouth Barracuda was a pretty sweet muscle car back in its day.

Although it seems today the second-generation cars get overlooked by the third-generation cars, they shouldn’t. This 1967 Plymouth Barracuda, prepared as a Hurst Edition, recently stopped by Jay Leno’s Garage and he shows you exactly why the ’67 Barracudas shouldn’t be ignored.

The 1967 Barracuda came with three body styles: the fastback, a notchback hardtop and a convertible. The engine bay was widened so the big block 383 would fit.  A 225 slant-six was the base offering in most of the ’67 Barracudas.

There were V8 options, and those ranged from the 2-barrel and 4-barrel versions of the 273, to the rarely ordered 383 big block.  The 383 big block would later only be available with the Formula S packages.

This black and gold Barracuda also has matching interior colors to complete the Hurst color scheme. Under the hood is a 360 engine punched out to 408 cubes includes NDX heads producing 500 horsepower, and that’s without the nitrous kicking in. When needed, a 150 shot nitrous kit is in on hand.

The engine is coupled with a TKO 600 5-speed trans, so it has no trouble on the get-up-and-go. The body sits atop a well-sorted suspension, accredited to Hotchkis and the centerline wheels give it a more traditional stance.

As Leno takes this beauty on a drive, he is very honest and forthcoming about the car. He states that it has some rattles and squeaks, but this is to be expected from a car built in the 1960’s. The steering on this car is still stock, so it makes for a dead feeling at center, that will extend out until the rack catches up.

This is a beautifully built car, done by guys in B&M (the parent company of Hurst), people who knew what they were doing and they did it right.
