During a woman’s dog walk, a shocking discovery unfolded: an abandoned kitten hidden inside a suitcase near the train tracks.

A woman was out walking her dog one day in a remote area in England when they happened upon a battered old suitcase, sitting on some abandoned train tracks. She didn’t think twice about it – until her dog started furiously sniffing it.

The woman stopped in front of the suitcase, and was suddenly able to hear faint meows coming from inside. She unzipped the suitcase just a little bit, and discovered a mother cat and her eight kittens.

All of the kittens were thin and malnourished, and the mother cat, later named Tarini, was extremely dehydrated. The kind woman took all nine cats home with her and immediately called the RSPCA to come and take them in. The 5-year-old mama cat was rushed to the vet and put in intensive care, while her babies were taken to one of the RSPCA centers.

“She was kept at the vets as she was so dehydrated and needed a drip, but has since been moved to the cattery to be with her litter and is doing much better,” Amy De-Keyzer of the RSPCA told The Dodo.

The kittens were only 5 weeks old, and other than needing food and love, they were all in pretty good health. Staff at the RSPCA decided to name the kittens after characters from the Disney movie The Aristocats. Their names are Toulouse, Tiny Tim, Scat Cat, Berloiz, Alli, Duchess, Marie and Eve.

It will still be awhile before this little family is up for adoption, as the RSPCA wants to make sure they are all strong and healthy before going off to their forever homes.

“The kittens are still too young to be rehomed and we need to make sure the mum is healthy enough before being rehomed,” De-Keyzer said.

If the woman’s dog hadn’t forced her to stop and open that suitcase, Tarini and her kittens might not have survived. Now they are safe and happy, building up their strength until it’s time to find their forever families.
