In early September, Iowa firefighter Malcolm Cortner responded to a routine call – a residential building engulfed in flames. Thankfully, the residents were safe, but one innocent life was in grave peril: a one-and-a-half-year-old mastiff.
Amidst the inferno, it was Malcolm who had the honor of rescuing the helpless dog. With great determination, he pulled the nearly unconscious canine away from the relentless fire.
Rescue teams equipped with specially designed oxygen masks for cats and dogs rushed to the scene. Through their swift actions, the dog regained consciousness and began to breathe again.
Local animal care and control services were summoned by the firefighters. After a brief examination, they delivered a disheartening verdict: the mastiff would survive, but it would necessitate extensive and costly medical care.
Upon hearing the approximate cost, the owner callously dismissed the dog, declaring, “Put him down!” However, Malcolm Cortner, unable to bear witness to the death of the very creature he had rescued at the risk of his own life, intervened.
With unwavering resolve, the firefighter offered to cover all the expenses if he could adopt the dog as his own. The city authorities granted their permission, and thus, the dog’s life was spared.
Cortner spared no effort in ensuring that his newly acquired companion received the best possible care. Two months later, the mastiff, who had been named George, made a remarkable recovery and regained his strength.
Today, George appears to be the epitome of health and happiness, mirroring the joy of his devoted owner, who had found a true friend in his courageous act of rescue.
The heartwarming story of George’s double rescue was shared by the local authorities on social media, accompanied by two contrasting pictures of the dog – one showing his dire state during the rescue, and the other capturing his vibrant, healthy self after rehabilitation.
Remarkably, George is soon approaching his second birthday, and we hope that his owner will commemorate this milestone with a fitting celebration.
