Owen, a one-day-old Golden Doodle puppy, was surrendered to a shelter by his breeder due to health challenges. He was half the size of his littermates, very thin, and had lost a significant amount of weight since birth. The shelter immediately took Owen in and provided him with the best care possible.
The dedicated staff at the shelter placed Owen in one of their incubators to keep him safe and warm. He had his first tube feedings to help him gain weight slowly and prevent regurgitation. Neonates like Owen are extremely fragile, but the shelter staff, including Dr. Knight and Dr. Lewis, a specialty dentistry surgeon, were determined to give him the best chance at survival.
With each passing day, Owen showed remarkable progress. He filled out visibly and tolerated the tube feedings well. He gained 19% of his body weight since his arrival, and his name, which means “young warrior; well-born,” proved to be fitting. Owen continued to grow and thrive under the care of the shelter staff.
Owen’s journey was not without challenges. He had a cleft palate that would require surgical repair once he was old enough, around 16 weeks. However, with each passing day, Owen proved to be a fighter. He became more active, making friends with both humans and other furry friends at the shelter.
As Owen turned four weeks old, he weighed in at an impressive 1 pound and 5 ounces. Despite his initial health challenges, Owen’s progress was nothing short of miraculous. He was on the move, exploring his surroundings and winning hearts with his adorable antics.
The shelter staff was overjoyed with Owen’s progress and celebrated each milestone. They provided him with the love, care, and attention he needed to thrive. Owen’s story inspired many, and he became a symbol of resilience and hope for other animals in need.
Owen’s journey is a testament to the power of love and care in overcoming challenges. With the unwavering dedication of the shelter staff, Owen’s future looks bright as he continues to grow and develop. The shelter is determined to find him a loving forever home where he will be cherished for the special young warrior that he is.
As Owen’s story continues to unfold, it serves as a reminder of the important work that shelters do in caring for and rehabilitating animals in need. Owen’s determination and the unwavering support of the shelter staff have given him a second chance at life, and he is sure to make a special addition to any family lucky enough to adopt him.
